What is a doula?

A doula is a professional birth partner. I support women during pregnancy to work out what type of birth they want and to understand their options. I can be with you during your baby’s birth as well. I support your partner so they can be fully present for you. I don’t take their place, I support you both!

If you’re wondering why you should pay for what a Doula offers, consider this - how much thought do we put into buying a house or planning a wedding? Should we treat pregnancy and birth with that same care and attention?
In reality birth affects us so much more and can change your life immeasurably.

I strongly believe if we give pregnancy and birth the same careful consideration, it will benefit us for the rest of our lives.

    - creation of birth preferences

    - navigation of maternity systems

    - one-to-one care

    - feeding assistance

    - holistic care

You can find out more about Doulas on Doula UK.

  • Doulas Improve Outcomes

A doula is someone who can support you one-to-one through your pregnancy, labour and birth, or after you have your baby, they provide support at home. Research (1) shows that people who have continuous support in labour and birth are less likely to have:

    - an instrumental birth

    - a caesarean section

    - a longer labour

  • Doulas Improve Experience

There is also evidence (2) that continuous doula support improves:

    - the experience of giving birth

    - your baby’s health and wellbeing shortly after birth.

    - breastfeeding rates

    - maternal mental health

I’m Anna, a birth and post-natal doula based in the North East of England. I trained with The Doula Training Foundation and I’m available to support women during pregnancy, birth and beyond, on Tyneside and in Northumberland.
